kmail keyboard mouse problem

The other day I started using one of kdmail's tips of the day on using the 
cursor keys for selecting emails and scrolling through them. I would normaly 
use a mouse. The problem is once I have read a few and start using the mouse 
to reply to one or two kmail starts selecting blocks of them. Once it starts 
doing this it seems to do it what ever I do but eventualy goes back to 
selecting single emails again. It retains the behaviour over restarts too. 
What am I doing to get this problem and what do I do to stop it?
