key shortcut passed to app

I use ctrl-alt-left and -right for switching between my two workspaces.
Now this keypress is passed to the focussed app on the workspace I switched
to, so for example xmms does a 5sec-jump or terminal moves cursor to the left.
how come? there a way to avoid this?
