Since the Compaq NX7010 uses an Intel 855 chipset, the problem may be related
to bug 69320 <http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69320>.
Try opening KMix, turning on the "Advanced" switch and looking for a switch
called "External amplifier down". If it's on, turn it off and see if that
helps.
It appears that 3.1.x versions of KMix leave this setting alone, whereas 3.2.0
turns it on, muting the laptop's internal speakers.
