kmail and new mail

You can add the target maildir as an inbox in Settings->Network (just like a
POP3 or IMAP account)
Then you can specify in which interval KMail updates the index based on the
maildir content.
I use the option "local mailbox" with mbox files for system mails for over a
year now without any problems.
I hope it works for maildir euqally well.
