klauncher/dcop problem

I recently installed suse 8.2 with kde 3.1.  I amd trying to get the modem 
working (will put in a sep msg) so I was able to bring up the xterm window.
After I thought I had configged the modem in kde, I clicked on kmail which is 
on the bottom bar, and got "klauncher could not be reached via dcop".  
Closing and attempting to re-open the xterm window gave me the same response.
