unable to start kde

as a normal user, i am unable to start kde either with switchdesk kde, startx 
-e startkde or after x starts in an xterm.

base installation is rh 8, compiled qt (it is in usr/local/qt), compiled arts, 
kdelibs, kdebase, kdenetwork without problems.

x is 4.3.0 from xfree.org, x and kde runs in root account but when i try to 
start kde as a user, i get 'can not start kdeinit'.

any ideas as to what the problem might be?
any help would be appreciated.
