Yes, it's a standard part of Linux (and other **ix style OSs)

- From X, use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to console 1 (or F2 for 2, F3 for 3, etc... 
up to 6). From a console, you can use either Ctrl-Alt-, or just Alt-.

To get back to X, use Ctrl-Alt-F7 (X is usually on virtual terminal 7).
