I don't know about you, but my KDE 3.1 install does use xscreensaver along 
with the KDE native screensavers, and some standalone ones as well. My 
screensaver list is enormous.

Assuming you're using KDE 3.1, you're probably missing the xine libs, which 
arts uses for video.
