You're right. Here's a new strace result.

time(NULL)                              = 1048072142
select(7, [6], NULL, NULL, {60, 0})     = 1 (in [6], left {60, 0})
read(6, "", 1)                          = 0
time(NULL)                              = 1048072142
[...]

(in fewer than a second).

This happens when I cancel an SMTP-transmission (by clicking on the button in 
the bottom-right of the window).
