Suddenly slow

I'm using KDE 3.1 on my 233mhz laptop. It was running beautifully, very fast. 
Then suddenly after I was fiddling loading some fonts now the application 
startup times have fallen through the floor. Instead of 5 seconds, konsole 
now takes around 30 seconds to start. Once an app is running though it is 
good. Anyone got any ideas on what could have suddenly broken this? Thanks,
