startkde hang - initializing system services

Greetings; I hope I'm posting to the right list, but if not, please point
me to one more applicable. I've done a build from source (3.1) on a
Debian woody box. Just arts, kdelibs, and kdebase to start, was going to
add the rest later. The compile process for each of these went smoothly,
but here's the problem...

On first startup, I get the region, theme, graphic setting box. That's
fine. Then the splash screen pops up. Gets past setting up IPC, but
chokes on 'Initializing System Services'. The console is displaying no
meaningful errors, nothing to troubleshoot on. Eventually the splash just
goes away, and I'm left with grey. Killing the X server off does leave
a 'startkde: could not start kdeinit'. I don't know if that's related, or
occurs normally because of the signal. Then DCOP shuts down and I'm left
with the console again.

Any ideas? Please?...

Thanks.

PS oh yeah... qt 3.1.1, also built from source.
