nec socks support

Hi

I am running FreeBSD 4.7 and i am connecting to the internet via a NEC 
socks5 server.  I tried to configure the socks setting in kde via the 
control panel: in auto-detection mode when I press the Test button it 
reports "Success! SOCKS was found and initialized".
But konqueror does not connect, ftp or lynx neither....
(Konqueror actually spits out the message:
 
"The process for the http://www.google.com protocol died unexpectedly."

when trying to connect e.g. to google)

Also, if I look at the console outside X, I see something like:

kioslave: ############## SEG FAULT ##############


Any idea or suggestion?
