3.1 Konsole font problem

Suddenly, when I open a console my fonts are strange -- i.e.

m  y   t  e  x  t    l  o  o  k  s   l  i  k  e   t  h  i  s

So, I opened up the font installer and was greeted with the message: "File 
does not exist and folder is not writeable"

Once into the installer, clicking ok to get past the message above, any 
changes are greeted with the message: "Could not save XRender configuration 
file (File permissions?)

I tried this from my personal account and root, with the same results.
