k3b can't see my dvd files when i'm trying to rip them

anyone had any luck with ripping dvd tracks with k3b?  i'm using gentoo here 
and can't even get past the first step in the howto: "click on the dvd drive 
and select the track you want to rip"  instead, i get the line: "disk is 
empty"

any ideas as to why this is happening?  k3b can read from the drive when it's 
holding something other than a dvd (ie, it can copy cd to cd, or make an iso 
of one using the dvd drive), but this step seems like it has something 
missing....
