volume control in kmix will not go higher than 31%

Tried aumix and it did not seem to make a difference. I previously had Caldera 
eServer 2.3 and had installed the ALSA and KDE software from source. 
Everthing worked just fine. I wonder if Mandrake has made changes that have 
caused the current condition? Any other ideas?
