volume control in kmix will not go higher than 31%

I am using:
Mandrake 9.1 with all updates applied as of 06/01/2003
KDE 3.10
ALS4000 sound card
When I set the volume in KMIX it will only go up to 31%. I don't see any 
settings that will account for this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
