Konqueror not displaying GIF images

Here is a hopefully simple question.

I upgraded to KDE 3.1 yesterday and noticed a problem.  Konqueror refuses to 
display any gif images.  I at first assumed it was a problem with qt so I 
recompiled it with -qt-gif turned on and this did not resolve the issue.

Does anyone know why Konqueror in the lastest version refuses to display gif 
images?
