Mixing Source and RPM

 I've running RH 7.3 with KDE 3.05 (3.0.5a libs) and since I can't get kdebase 
src.rpm to compile what if I uninstalled my current kdebase and compiled the 
3.0.5a version from source? Would it work? Thanks
