Permissions problem for desktop

Hello list,

When I try to create a new desktop item I get: 

Could not save properties. You do not have sufficient access to write to 
/home/jeff/Desktop/Link to Application.

I'm running kde 3.1 (self-compiled) under Debian sid. 

drwxrwxrwx    4 jeff     jeff         4096 Feb 20 20:15 Desktop
