kmail and attachments

Hello everyone,
somebody sent me an email with an attachment file.
It doesnt appear anywhere. if this person hadnt said in his text that he was 
sending me a picture I wouldnt have noticed it.
I had  to reactivate the mime tree in the layout to have it appear.
Is it the only way to have attachments appear?
I remember having attachments as links at the bottom of the page in the past.
Did I miss some option somewhere?
