strange behaviour of Kinternet

Since I installed SuSE 8.1 prof. I have to restart my computer, if I want to
connect a second time to the internet.(Logging in and out does not remedy)
Kinternet log says the following (first dialling and second dialling)
--------
SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd), Version 0.78 on linux.
wwwoffle not is running
Selection of interface/provider "ppp0"/"HCCNET" succeeded.
Starting connection. (2002-12-21 17:11:27 CET)
pppd: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.42
pppd: --> Initializing modem.
pppd: --> Sending: ATZ
pppd: ATZ
pppd: OK
pppd: --> Sending: AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
pppd: AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
pppd: OK
pppd: --> Sending: ATM1
pppd: ATM1
pppd: OK
pppd: --> Modem initialized.
pppd: --> Sending: ATDT0676042222
pppd: --> Waiting for carrier.
pppd: ATDT0676042222
Stopping connection. (2002-12-21 17:11:40 CET)
pppd: Terminating on signal 15.
pppd: --> Disconnecting at Sat Dec 21 17:11:40 2002
We are disconnected. (2002-12-21 17:11:43 CET)
pppd died: non-normal exit
Starting connection. (2002-12-21 17:11:59 CET)
pppd: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd: Removed stale lock on ttyACM0 (pid 1126)
pppd: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.42
pppd: --> Initializing modem.
pppd: --> Sending: ATZ
pppd: --> Sending: ATQ0
pppd: ATQ0
pppd: OK
pppd: --> Re-Sending: ATZ
pppd: ATZ
pppd: OK
pppd: --> stdin not read/write and $MODEM not set
pppd: Connect script failed
pppd died: Connect script failed (exit code 8)
-----------
I checked stdin before and after dialling:
stdin rw-rw-rw- root root -> fd/0
fd/0  rw-rw-rw- root root -> /dev/null
/dev/null rw-rw-rw- root root

environment variable MODEM does not appear in the list, asked for by giving
the command "env" on the console.

I configured wvdial. It seems, that Kinternet corrupts wvdial. After a
connection by means of Kinternet wvdial sends 6 times ATZ , then exits.

When switching from SuSE 7.2 to 8.1 nothing has been changed into the
hardware.

Please give me a more elegant way to dial-in more times during a log-in.
Thanks a lot

Jos van Boven
