kppp and cycling

i have 2 computers, one i have just rebuilt.

not liking what rh has done in 8, i compile kde from source.

i did things in the following order:

qt, arts, libs, base, network, then the rest in no particular order.

to get rid of redhat's x scripts, i installed xfree 4.3.0 from www.xfree.org.

until i installed the rest of kde, my dialup worked fine. now that i have 
compilled the rest of kde, my dialup connects, but i cant go anywhere or 
download mail.

was wondering what was happening here?

any help would be appreciated.

btw: the second comp, (base rh8 install) has the same settings as my rebuilt 
box, which works just fine.
