kioslave/konqueror http retrieval times

Does anyone know why kioslave/konqueror takes a lot longer (>5secs more) to 
load a page than wget would?  I am only on dialup, but wget can get a webpage 
in about 10 seconds.  The progress dialog sits there with no information for 
about 10-15 seconds before it even says "website.com contacted. Waiting for 
reply".

KDE 3.1.1 Debian GNU testing.  Dial up 'net connection, Athlon XP 1900+ with 
768MB RAM.
