Hmmm...

I just found, while trying to figure it out by watching startkde, that if I 
take the '>/dev/null 2>/dev/null' off of the end of line 118 (which greps 
kpersonalizerrc for 'FirstLogin=false') then it works fine...

Which led me to examine /dev/null a bit more closely... Somehow, its 
permissions had been changed to rw-r--r--. It must have happened very 
recently as I hadn't noticed any other odd behaviour from programs; possibly 
when the system crashed last night during the backup - there were lots of 
transactions replayed when I rebooted it so maybe a few file permissions got 
corrupted too.
