Spellcheck does not work in KDE3 but OK in KDE2

Greetings,

Whenever I try to run a spell check in any KDE 3.0 or 3.0.3 app like Kmail, 
Kedit etc, I get the following message:

ISpell could not be started.
Please make sure you have ISpell properly configured and in your PATH.

Aspell, pspell and ispell can all be started from the command line.  The 
relevant packages from SuSE 8.0 Professional have been installed and 
verified.

The speller works perfectly in my RedHat  7.0 / KDE 2.2 machine. 

Any hints
