You're on the right path.

If I understood the documentation of KSystemTray correctly, you just create 
an instance of KSystemTray using your mainwidget as its parent.

You the use the setIcon method on your KSystemTray object to set your icon.

The docking happens as soon as you call the KSystemTray objects show() method.
It will be undocked if you call hide()

Anyway, if you have development question the right place to ask them is
