Alarms don't work

I am wondering if I have to have a plugin or a daemon running to have 
alarms work in kde.  I set alarms in Evolution, KOrganizer, et. al. and 
then the time comes I get a popup but no sound.  My sound card works 
fine but I can't get any .wav files to play.
