DCOP, artsd crashing, how to troubleshoot?

I've been having similar problems.
There is a post on the Gentoo forums ( http://www.gentoo.org )
which indicated that some of KDE 3.0.1 does not 
work properly if certain compiler optimisations used.
If you've compiled yourself. This might be the issue although
as yet I've not been able to fix things up for myself.
In particular, one known guilty compilation option is,

-fomit-frame-pointer
