Give up and buy some 'hardware' modem. SM56 is a 'software' modem, and as such 
it requires a complicated 'driver'. This 'driver' is written for Windows.
You can see http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/SM56_DRIVERS.html#linux , 
however I was not able to force this driver to work with newer kernels... 

I have utilized this modem as a gift for my friend. :-)
