The latter. The only thing that is configurable is that you can turn 
on/off the size column and that you can choose whether the sender or 
the recipient(s) should be shown. The latter was probably new in KMail 
1.4 (KDE 3.0).

P.S.: My OpenPGP key expires soon. Use 'gpg --keyserver pgp.dtype.org 
- --recv-keys 0xF869951B' to get an updated version of the key with 
extended expiration date.
