installing new kio_slaves

I installed a few kio_slaves (kio_fish, kio_sql, kio_kmd).
The built and installed just fine, but kde cannot see them. (i.e. konqueror
doesn't recognize them as slaves, and they don't show up in my control panel
list)

the first one I installed created a new directory tree, /usr/local/kde, and
the object files for the slaves are located in /usr/local/kde/lib/kde3

However, my other ones (that installed with kde3) seem to be in
/usr/local/lib.

I tried symlinking and hardlinking the object files, and their corresponding la
files to /usr/local/lib, but that didn't help.

How to I get KDE to see my new ioslaves?

KDE:	KDE 3.0.2 (Built from ports)
OS:	FreeBSD 4.6.2-RELEASE (Intel)

I can't imagine being the first to run across this, but I *did* check the
archives... ;)

I appreciate any direction anyone can offer on this...

Thanks
