No desktop icons = no background refresh

Hi,
I have my desktop setup to choose a random wallpaper every 60 seconds, under 
kde 3.0, i've found that turning off "Enable Icons on Desktop" causes the 
desktop to not be refreshed when a new background is loaded - only portions 
underneath windows are refreshed when a window moves or disappears.
I don't know if this was the case under 2.2.2, becuase I never noticed if I 
could disable icons on the desktop.
