Are you using a different KDE3 to the rest of us Dan?  Damn! you better send 
your copy in to the kde developers who can slash their wrists after spending 
months rewriting their apps for kde3!!!

*NO* kde2 apps work in kde3. KDE2 apps link with kde2 core libraries and qt2 
core libraries not kde3 ones. Like all linux apps though including 
kde1/gnome/gtk/motif you can run them all together under a common window 
manager (in this case the kde3 version of kwin) provided you have all their 
library and support files still on your system.
So, yes if you leave kde2 installed or use kde2/qt2 compat libraries you can 
run kde2 apps under kde3 however it is not really recommended in cases where 
you have both a kde2 and a kde3 version of an app (ie kmail or konq) if they 
are sharing config files as I guarantee you *will* corrupt your system.
