Konqueror 3.0.0 Applet Problem

I'm haveing a problem running applets in Konqueror 3.0.0.

Frequently (but not always) an applet seems to load but does not actually 
display, I just get a blank grey rectangle.

I'm running RH7.2 with Kernel 2.4.17.
I built KDE3 from sources.
This happens with both JRE 1.4.0 and 1.3.1_02 from Sun.
No errors are displayed in the Java Console.
Reloading the page will sometimes get the applet to display.

Any suggestions?
