No sound in KDE3

yes, I do:

kde3 at linux:~> which artswrapper
/opt/kde3/bin/artswrapper
kde3 at linux:~> artswrapper
>> running as realtime process now (priority 50)
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)
kde3 at linux:~> dir /dev/dsp
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            9 Apr  5 11:32 /dev/dsp -> /dev/dsp0

what does that mean? "can't be opened" ??

by the way: aplay or the alsaplayer work, but not the sound of the 
kdeapplications like KDE Mediaplayer etc.. :((
