This is question #2 in the KMail FAQ:

This is the recommended way to do it (cf. the FAQ) because this will 
assure that all message flags are carried over correctly.

Using some external script as Mike suggested might lead to problems. You 
should at least compact all your folders before using an external 
script because else already deleted or duplicate messages might show up 
after conversion.
