Try to connect to Wayland via Ubuntu's MIR part, it worked in 16 I think (I do not run it from 12.04)
I think it is out there
it is hard to write from scratch entire compositor
it is nice you would like to continue with X11
Mate DE 1.28 uses X and talks to Wayland nicely even with Compiz btw
keep it simple keep it nice (4 coding as well)
BSD guys claim Wayland should be rewritten not debugged anyway maybe WayLibre 1/7 in size haha
I see Way tools complicated (own compositor) enough privately but may be terribly wrong
