kmail cannot write archives

Since some days I deal with kmail, especially testing archiving possibilities.

On 3 year old PC with kubuntu 20.04.

First tried automatic archiving.
Result: crash.

Then manual arciving.
Result: cannot archive INBOX, archive cannot be opened for write.
But the target is a newly created and ext4  formated partition on a hard 
disk, I can "touch" a file to it.

Then changing the archive target from hard dist to /dev/null.
Result: cannot archive INBOX, archive cannot be opened for write.
