Hello everybody,
I'm Luca Tringali, and I want to propose an idea I had some days ago.
First of all think about the fact that in a near future the main operations
will be done using cloud services, also by common users. This means we need to
reinvent many applications as web-based ones. For this reason I thought about a
version of KDE built as web application: I started programming with SVG and
Javascript (and HTML5, obiously), and it's great. I also found that a
programmer wrote an entire toolkit (www.carto.net) with SVG+JS, and it's
working really fine.
You can find my work here:
git://anongit.kde.org/scratch/lucatringali/stibium.git
I called the project "Stibium" (for some other informations give a look at the
file about.html or simply click on the blinking KDE logo at the login screen).
Actually it's just a draft, but some things work: for example, I started
writing an implementation for UbuntuOne APIs, and if you have an UbunuOne
account, you can login into Stibium and open the filemanager clicking on the
KDE logo. And I'm also working on a good menu.
Theorically it can be estended easily writing applications (I'm working on a
file manager, a mediaplayer, and a document visualizer): since a window is
created with a big iframe element, an application is just a web document (you
can use any programming language, but I strongly recommend SVG+JS).
It needs a server with PHP and OAuth. As client, I think Firefox is the better
option (because webKit has some troubles with the iframe).
So, I wanted to know what do you think about this project, and if it could be
possible to create a repository on the official KDE playground, so someone else
can help me programming.
If you have any doubt, please ask me.
Luca Tringali
