There is something wrong. An error (such as FailedToStart) triggers a call
to dotError(), which should show the error message about not being able
to run dot...

Why is the change to dotError() in your patch needed anyway?
It always calls showRenderError(), also without your changes.
Therefore, I do not understand why your patch shows the correct message.
