install location problems

Please not only about the places where they are still open, but also those
places where it has been already fixed/worked around/hacked to make it work
somehow.
Maybe we can find a solution which works the same way both under UNIX and
Windows (and OSX), without having to take special care of the Windows needs in
the future, and making the UNIX version more flexible at the same time.
