Hello everybody,
The Google Summer of Code program for 2010 has been announced.
KDE will probably gain several students again, and I would really like
to have one student working on KDE on Windows this year.
So if you are over 18 and at a university/college and you have some time
this spring for programming, think a bit about it...
What means Summer of Code?
- - You would work on a KDE related project.
- - You'll get a mentor which will be one out of the KDE on Windows crew.
He will help you in case you have questions and also evaluate your work.
- - You'll get payment. In the last years, this has been 4500USD for the
student and another 500USD for the project (in this case KDE), I am not
sure about this years numbers though.
What you can do now:
- - Try to become familiar with building and developing KDE on Windows and
try to become involved and submit some patches (this would also include
getting an svn account).
- - look around for parts of KDE that need special treatment on Windows.
Examples would be: "port Konsole to Windows similar to what console2 is
doing", "implementing more stuff in the wmi backend, e.g. power supply
support" and similar projects. If you have found some things you could
work on, simply ask us whether this could be ok.
- - make an application on the google web site (I will provide further
details later on).
It is not sure that you'll get chosen then, as this is decided by common
voting of all mentors; this basically depends on your application.
So far,
Patrick
