upgrading KDE

and if one chooses to *not* download the latest installer
will the update still occur (or does the update require the

just curious as to how the installer is designed to work.  i
would also like to understand the relationship the installer
has to the version of KDE that's being installed.  i normally
would not expect an "installer" to care much about what it
was installing.
