new emerge functionality?

Hi Christian, Saro,
Thanks, I'll retry with emerge.  I got rid of everything emerge-related
before installing with the installer because I thought they might conflict.
So I'm rebuilding now with emerge from scratch.  I will let you know how it
goes.
