Well, I didn't do anything in the last few months just because of time issues. 
I also didn't think of myself as "the maintainer", so I don't have problems 
with that.

That's probably a good idea and I will do that, as quite a lot of the code is 
from me. When developing I rather thought of features than about my name. ;)
Just the files I created (kcharselectdata_p.h/kcharselectdata.cpp) contain my 
name.

Since I don't have an official maintainer title, there is nothing to give 
up. :)

I have some small changes in mind, but I don't need to be the maintainer for 
that. Also I don't know when I will find the time to code. So just take the 
maintainership and have fun developing.

That's right, the header isn't included anywhere, but the translation scripts 
scan it.

The source of the unicode data is the binary file "kcharselect-data" which is 
generated by "kcharselect-generate-datafile.py" in kdeutils from plain text 
files from unicode.org. But since at least the names of the categories and 
scripts should be translated there has to be some way for the translation 
system of getting these strings.

It would have been possible to add a custom script to read the strings from 
the binary file (headache guaranteed) or doing it the easy way by adding a 
dummy file.

KGeography does the same (kdeedu/kgeography/src/mapsdatatranslation.cpp).
