Adding the presence applet to the desktop is ok, but adding to a panel results
in an invisible status icon:

Hovering the mouse reveals a pop-up showing that the applet was added correctly
and right-click works as expected. Rebooting doesn't help.

Add presence-applet to a panel

Actual Results:  
no icon visible, but applet is there and working

visible status icon
