Do we really need replay button? The entire block (message + avatar + title)
can be clickable. Its much better to have more text visible that a redundant
button. Also the block is bigger than button, so its easier to use on touch
interfaces.

+1 there, but since we have tight phone book integration, its unlikely many
of your friends wont have any picture set in
gTalk/faceboo/skype/jabber/linked in/ any picture you have photo-taged in
digicam etc

Hmm, in most cases there wouldn't be enough space to display entire message
recived, so in-line reply (at least how i image you point) do look like
over-engineering.
However if we could came up with an idea how to add facebook-style
chatting...
p.s. have you checked out brainstorm section (just use google to browse it).
