Contact List Elide Text Patch

Hello,

I was giving contact list (new version) a whirl. Noticed that it didn't do any 
eliding of the text for the status and user name. I decided to write a patch 
for it. I don't remember the name of the person that handles the project. Just 
thought I would post it on the mailing list. And someone can test it or ignore 
it.
