Focussing purely on the "messages get eaten" part, as this is the most
critical:

When the channel emits invalidated() we should disable the send button. (and
possibly the text edit?). I think this would work. 

In the future we might want to try and re-establish a new channel, and make
sure we re-use the same windows but that can wait.
