Model for contacts in a Channel

For text chats (and probably many other people need ) I need to keep a model 
of all contacts in a channel.

I raised this on IRC and was told at the time, "don't do this right now, due 
to ongoing major changes to the main KDE Telepathy library".

I'm writing to ask:
is this still the case? is anyone working on such a model? If not, does anyone 
object to me writing something?
